Strings of beer can lids are hardly typical house and garden ornaments. Buildings do not
usually emit or transmit sound. Nor does a neighborhood generally continue scrap metal welded into
a paean to fruit.
But all these oddities exist in Houston. They are stirs of individualism and humor in a city
filled with buildings that dwarf its inhabitants. Forget the Astrodome, the Gallery, even the latest
tourist magnet, the water wall at the Transco Tower. Lurking in inner-city neighborhoods are scores
of human-scaled delights -- some whimsical, some downright odd.
